OGHA ASSURES ASSOCIATION OF TEACHERS OF YORUBA LANGUAGE ON SUPPORTING LEGISLATIONS
Ogun State House of Assembly has assured the Association of Teachers of Yoruba Language & Culture of Nigeria of legislative support that would aid the promotion of Yoruba indigenous languages, with a view to further preserving it from going into extinction.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, gave the assurance, while playing host to a delegation from the Association led by Olusiji Adegboyega, at the Assembly’s Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
Elemide decried the continued apathy in the use of the indigenous language leading to eroding value in the use of the Yoruba language, which had now been substituted for foreign languages.
He reassured that the State House of Assembly had been at the forefront of promoting Yoruba cultural heritage including the use of mother tongue as part of its official language during plenary and other legislative activities.
Contributing, the Deputy Speaker, Bolanle Lateefat Ajayi, sought the need for the association to partner with relevant stakeholders in the educational sector to review educational curriculum to be taught with indigenous language, noting that such would aid the promotion and preservation of the mother tongue amongst students.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation, Adegboyega canvassed for legislative support to aid the teaching of Yoruba language in schools, noting that the association had been steadfast in its resolve to further promote the Yoruba cultural heritage across all levels of education in the State.
