OGUN SPEAKER PROMISES PWDs OF LEGISLATIVE SUPPORT, CHALLENGES HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ON ALTERNATIVE TREATMENT FOR CANCER

The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, has assured the people with disabilities of necessary legislative support that would address issues affecting them in the course of enacting any legislation so as to further improve their living conditions.

Elemide in company of other lawmakers, disclosed this during an advocacy visit by members of the disability community, Ogun State Chapter at the ground floor of the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, assuring that the Tenth Assembly would give improved priority to the well-being of the people, whom he described as personalities with special talents.

Earlier, the National President of the Spinal Cord Injury Association (SCIAN), Mr. Abdullah Matepo, who led other members of the disability community to the House expressed gratitude to the State Assembly, noting that the group, which consisted of various clusters, had sought the support of the lawmakers for the assent of Disability Law passed in 2017, to enable the State have a legislative framework for the disabled community like other States in the South-West Geo-political zone.

He implored the Speaker to prioritize the welfare and assistance to the group by reviewing the legislation to address some grey areas for implementation by the Executive arm of the State, noting that such steps would further foster inclusivity and equity for people with disabilities in the State.

In a similar development, the Speaker has challenged medical professionals in the country to develop an alternative medical treatment for cancer, saying Africans had an effective treatments to all forms of diseases before the advent of modern medical practice.

Rt. Hon. Elemide threw the challenge, while playing host to the executive members of the State branch of the Nigerian Cancer Society led by the Secretary, Dr. Lateef Salako on an advocacy visit to the Assembly.

He stressed the need for the medical professionals to look inward for alternative treatments, saying Africans had the necessary resources to cater for any forms of diseases.

Earlier in his presentation Dr. Salako sought collaboration of the State lawmakers to enhance health service delivery, lamenting that the incident of cancer is increasing daily across the country.

He called for vigorous sensitization and awareness about cancer amongst the people, including screening and early diagnosis from the primary health care level to aid the treatment.
