STATE OF ROAD PROJECTS: OGHA ENGAGES WORKS, ENVIRONMENT COMMISSIONERS, CAUTIONS RESIDENTS ON MEASURES AGAINST FLOODING

The Ogun State House of Assembly has engaged the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, and his Environment counterpart, Mr. Ola Oresanya, on the need to provide clarifications on the state and nature of some ongoing road projects and environmental control measures to prevent incidents of flash flood in all parts of the State.

The meeting which was presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta was an avenue for the lawmakers to seek clarification on the state of the roads in their various constituencies

The Speaker in company of Honorables Adegoke Adeyanju, Yusuf Sherrif, Babatunde Tella, Folawewo Salami, Olusegun Kaka Odunuga, Oluwaseun Adesanya, Dickson Awolaja and Musefiu Lamidi said that the engagement formed part of the Assembly’s Committee of the Whole’s oversight on the state of road infrastructure as well as the move to prevent flooding and pollution challenges in the State.

He re- emphasized the need for the residents of the State to avoid dumping of refuse in drainage channels to avoid flooding; requesting that the State Ministry of Works provide detailed documentation of all ongoing and completed projects as well as those on the radar to the Assembly in due course.

The lawmakers reiterated the urgent need for accelerated interventions on critical roads and called for sustained control to avert flooding.

In their various remarks, lawmakers requested for updates on the state of the various road projects including second part of Elega -Adedotun- Enugada road and Elega Bode- Olude road in Abeokuta North, Stadium- Idomila Army Barracks road in Ijebu- North East, Iweke/Iwoye portions of Owode- Ilaro road, second lane of Atan- Agbara road and Ado/ Odo – Ikoga road, as well as damaged portion of Owode- Ijako road and the need to consider more road project at Ago-Iwoye in Ijebu North 2 State Constituency amongst others.

Taking on the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ola Oresanya, lawmaker representing Ijebu-North 2 State Constituency requested for an immediate intervention from the Ministry to carry out massive drainage system for environmental flood control along Toruka Stream – Omoluwere- Ome Stream at Ago-Iwoye.

Earlier in his response, the State Commissioner for Environment explained that the Ministry had intensified efforts to tackle flooding and other environmental concerns through massive dredging of drainage channels across the State.

He disclosed that mitigating measures included the creation of by-pass channels to connect tertiary channels with primary water routes would further aid flood prevention; stressing the need for the issuance of early flood alerts to vulnerable communities.

On his part, the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Akinsanya, assured the lawmakers that all ongoing road projects were being monitored to ensure completion immediately the rains subside.

He promised that the Ministry would furnish the House with a comprehensive list of road projects earmarked for rehabilitation, reconstruction, and maintenance under the current fiscal year, stressing the administration’s commitment to improving road networks in all parts of the State.
