Ogun State House of Assembly through its Committee on Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions has waded in to a matter between the owner of the defunct Vitamalt PLC, Chief Kolapo Lawson, alongside a Receiver Manager, Mr. Kunle Ogunba reportedly appointed by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria, leading to the failure of the company in paying its disengaged workers their exit entitlements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Presiding over a meeting between the representatives of the Company and its affected former staffers at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Oluseun Adesanya, appealed to members of the union to remain calm and be patient; assuring them of the Assembly\u2019s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He also sought the cooperation of the company\u2019s management and owners in resolving the matter so as to make life easier for the disengaged workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Earlier in his presentation, the leader of the disengaged workers, Comrade Akeem Oyinlola, informed the Committee that they were seeking urgent intervention over the non-payment of their exit entitlements following the sudden closure of the company in July 2010 without prior notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He lamented that more than 15 former employees had died over the years due to the hardship and neglect arising from the company\u2019s failure to settle the workers’ benefits despite years of dedicated service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The union further explained that the matter had been reported to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, where it was agreed that all affected staff should be paid, but several engagements with the company owner and media interventions failed to yield any result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Responding to the petition, a representative of the Company and former senior finance staff, Mr. Oluwabunmi Ojo, told the Committee that the crisis began in 2009, following the union\u2019s demand for a 13th-month salary which the company was unable to pay, leading to an industrial strike that halted production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He added that the shutdown disrupted the company\u2019s operations and loan obligations with the then Intercontinental Bank, which later became Access Bank before the loan was transferred to AMCON, resulting in the appointment of a Receiver Manager and subsequent legal disputes over the company\u2019s assets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mr Ojo noted that the management and shareholders would welcome the intervention of the Assembly, expressing hope that a resolution would not only address the workers\u2019 entitlements but also pave the way for the revival of the company, which had remained under AMCON management since August 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
